This has a slightly steeper grade than other rail trails I have been on, but it is still pretty flat. That was before it was a formalized trail. The ridgeline leading from Black Mountain to Fracture Ridge Peak is pretty, and the desert views are lovely. There were a good amount of uphill sections that were a bit much for my son.
